Languages at HEC-ULg Management School

Bachelor 1: 

Course in English – Objective at the end of Bachelor 1: 

  • to reach B1 level (according to the norms established by the common European reference framework for languages, B1 level is the threshold level at which a student can understand the essential points when a language is spoken in a clear, standard manner and the subject matter is familiar, relating to work or school, leisure activities, etc.).
  • to practice what has been learnt and to refresh it by self-teaching in a second foreign language;  orientation workshop for the choice of the 2nd language in Bachelor 2    

 

 

From Bachelor 2 onwards:

Choice of a 2nd language from the following list:

  Dutch
  German
  Spanish
  Italian

 

If B2 level has been achieved at the end of the Bachelor cycle, the student can choose a 3rd language.

B2 level:  At this level, the student can understand the essential content of concrete or abstract subjects in a complex text, including a technical discussion in his specialty.  He or she can communicate with a certain spontaneity and ease so that a conversation with a native speaker is not a source of tension for either party.

An original and innovative teaching and learning structure

The skills portfolio makes available to students intensive workshops concentrating on acquiring transversal skills such as:

  researching information,
  negotiating,
  ability to work in teams, etc.

These workshops are organized for very small groups of students, starting from the 2nd year of the Bachelor’s degree.  They will be led by several trainers, including:

  experts in different skills areas
  teachers from other faculties and schools (University Theatre, political sciences, law, etc.)
  professionals from within companies.

The workshops taken and the skills acquired during them will be part of the diploma obtained by the students, in the form of a document attached to the diploma. 

Bachelor's Degree in Economic Sciences and Management

Competencies expected from Bachelors in Economic Sciences and Management

  • Understanding of the foundations of Management and Economic Sciences, through an introduction to the following basic subjects:
     
    • political economics, microeconomics, macroeconomics…
    • main roles in business: finance, marketing, human resources management, supply chain management 
  • Understanding of the legal, societal, and human environment of organizations: law, sociology, political sciences, etc.
  • Acquisition of basic methodological tools: mathematical modeling, statistics, IT;
  • Proficiency in at least two foreign languages: English (at a level equivalent to the International C1 standard) and another language (at minimum B2 level);
  • Ability to critically apply learned knowledge to the reality observed in a simple field situation and/or in a transversal context;
  • Ability to summarize and communicate the knowledge acquired and the observations made;
  • Capacity to integrate management decisions into their economic context (mixed training);
  • Broad exposure to the professions of economics and management;
  • Particular accent on understanding the human, social and legal context of organizations.

For 2nd and 3rd year undergraduate students in 2010-2011 and 2011-2012

 

Bachelor in Business Engineering 

Competencies expected from Bachelors in Business Engineering

  • Understanding of the foundations of Management and Economic Sciences, through an introduction to the following basic subjects:
     
    • political economics, microeconomics, macroeconomics…
    • main roles in business: finance, marketing, human resources management, supply chain management 
  • Comprehension of the legal, societal, and human environment of organizations: law, sociology, political sciences, etc.
  • Acquisition of basic methodological tools: mathematical modeling, statistics, IT;
  • Proficiency in at least two foreign languages: English (at a level equivalent to the international norm C1) and another foreign language (at minimum level B2) ;
  • Ability to critically apply learned knowledge to the reality observed in a simple field situation and/or in a transversal context;
  • Capacity to summarize and communicate the knowledge acquired and the observations made;
  • Capacity for analytical thinking particularly using mathematical and IT models;
  • Knowledge and comprehension of the foundations of natural sciences (physics, chemistry, biology) and the interactions: sciences ↔ applied sciences ↔ industrial products and techniques ↔ industrial innovation...
