Research grants
Research grants comprise all the financial supports for which a researcher can apply. They apply to various different areas, of which the main ones are:
- doctorate and post-doctorate grants;
- grants for research projects;
- IN and OUT mobility grants;
- publishing grants.
The different types are set out in a table with a drop down menu so that you can find the type of grant for which you may be eligible according to your profile.

The Programs:
7th Framework Program
The 7th Framework Program (7th FP) comprises all the EU initiatives relating to research and thus plays a crucial role in achieving aims concerning growth, competition and employment.
Organization of 7th Framework Program
The general objectives of the 7th FP can be put into four categories:
- The specific program on Cooperation supports all types of research activities carried out by various research bodies in trans-national cooperation. It is subdivided into ten themes which reflect the most important fields of knowledge and technology, where research excellence particularly important to improve Europe's ability to overcome future challenges in social, economic, public health environmental and industrial fields.
- The objective of the specific program Ideas is to reinforce excellence, dynamism and creativity in European research and improve the attractiveness of Europe for researchers from Europe and worldwide, as well as for industrial research investment, by providing a Europe-wide competitive structure funding in addition to and not replacing national funding for "frontier research" carried out by individual teams.
- The objective of the People program is to support the future development and consolidation of the European Research Area, by stimulating people to enter into the profession of researcher, encouraging European researchers to remain in Europe, and attracting researchers from the entire world to come and work in Europe, making Europe more attractive to the best researchers.
- The Capacities program aims to improve the research and innovation capacities across Europe and to ensure their optimal use. It aims to operate in research infrastructures, research for the benefit of SMEs, support for the coherent development of research policies, and international cooperation.
Each new call for tenders is published in the Official Journal of the EU. They are also published in Tenders Electronic Daily, a supplement to the Official Journal. The relevant calls for tenders are then published on CORDIS, which offers a complete overview of programs, actions and calls for tenders linked to research, development and innovation.
Start-up Grants:
Currently, the DGTRE and the FNRS offer the possibility of grants for the preparation of a project submission relating to one of the 7th FP programs: DGTRE: Horizon - Europe (Universities, Higher Education Institutes and Centers) and subsidy of F.R.S.- FNRS for the creation of European projects.
As part of the 7th FP, every year the European Commission publishes "Work Programs" relating to the different research themes financed.
These documents list the approach taken for that particular year, the participation rules, eligibility criteria... and above all the content (topics) of calls for tenders.
The definitive version of these Work Programs is available once the calls for projects are officially launched. However, we receive working versions of these documents during the months which precede their publication.
Although these are official documents and are subject to modifications, these drafts mean it is possible to anticipate calls. You can download the most recent draft versions we have available by following this link on the ULg INTRANET:

Federal Scientific Policy
Besides the Interuniversity Attraction Poles (IAP), the Federal Scientific Policy offers themed programs. These programs target the acquisition of scientific knowledge for the development of tools to assist Federal policy decision making. Some of these are the pluriannual projects (SDD - Science for Sustainable Development, and Society and the Future); permanent programs (Agora and the Drugs Problem); and support projects for the Strategic Priorities of the Federal Authority.
The Walloon Region
Via the Mobilizing Programs, the Region has two targets: to reinforce the scientific potential of its universities and of its higher education centers and to develop this within the industrial fabric of Wallonia.
This double objective is pursued by financing applicable research projects, meaning projects which, in the long term, will yield results that can be used in existing or future enterprises. The programs are generally thematic and focused on areas which are of great interest to industry in Wallonia.
The FIRST program (program to provide training and impetus for scientific and technical research) allows researchers to become familiar with the industrial milieu whilst keeping their university status.
The program pays the salary for two or more years, of a young researcher in charge of leading a focused research project in a university institution or at university level, which could have a long-term impact on the economic and social development of Wallonia.

PRISME
Prisme (School Research Commission) supports scientific production through the attribution of grants and subsidies.

Axa Research Fund
The AXA group has recently created a Research Fund. For whatever type of finance requested, the Fund has put in place a precise application process:
Requests must be submitted by a research institution which has been registered with the Fund, not by individuals (University of Liège is in the process of being registered); the number of dossiers submitted to the Fund requesting grants is limited for each call. This means that each institution must coordinate the submission of dossiers and if necessary, use a pre-selection procedure.
The fields of research financed by the Fund relate to major changes in the modern world and their associated risks.
Interested researchers are invited to make themselves known to the ARD of the University.

Res@tice Researchers' Network
The Res@tice network aims to encourage partnerships between researchers from French speaking areas in the South, the East and the North, to support the dissemination of research and to be responsible for scientific activity in the field of ICT, in keeping with existing or emerging practices and with attention paid to the diversity of contexts and cultures. The Procedures Guide explains the functioning of the network in the framework set up by the AUF and details current and future actions.
