ULg is a member of EURAXESS (European Research Area - Mobility of Researcher), and is qualified to award scientific visas.  The Mobility Center of Liège University can help researchers with their visa applications, with obtaining their status at ULg (admission, enrollment, contract), with the administrative formalities at the City of Liège, with opening a bank account, with taking out a health insurance policy or for any practical question related to their stay.

IN Mobility

Inviting Speakers to contribute to Economics and Management Seminars

Short Stays

Prisme offers the possibility of inviting researchers from foreign Universities for a period of around 15 days on condition that this invitation be accompanied by a scientific output.  Such invitations must be approved by the President of the Teaching and Research Unit concerned. 

Money granted:  maximum € 2,500 per stay plus € 3,000 for 15 hours of teaching in addition to funds from Socrates and Erasmus.

Post-Doctoral Stays

Temporary FNRS Post-Doctoral Researcher

A temporary post-doctoral researcher’s contract is valid for three years maximum.

The post-doctoral visitor’s stay must be an integral part of the global duration of his or her research agreement and cannot continue beyond it.

 

Supervisors may invite to their laboratory foreign researchers who hold a doctor’s degree with a thesis, and:

  • wish to conduct a full-time free research project, without any work contract;
  • are in a situation of international scientific mobility when they first apply for a post-doctoral grant;
  • as such, may receive from the host university a tax exempt post-doctoral grant that is subject to the social security coverage for salaried workers. 

A researcher is in a "situation of international mobility" if he or she has not resided or exercised his or her main activity (employment, study, etc.) in Belgium for more than 24 months in the three years immediately preceding the first post-doctoral stay. 

Regulations

Money granted:  maximum € 3,000/year, subsidy justified by the universities.

Date for submission of the request:  Post doctoral contracts at ULg for foreign researchers

The post-doctoral grant is valid for a maximum period of 12 months (the stay must begin between 1 September and 31 December).

Eligibility Conditions:

  • being entitled to receive a tax exempt post-doctoral grant (AC regulations of 22/09/2004);
  • pursuing full-time free research at ULg without any subordination;
  • having obtained a doctorate with a thesis no more than 8 years prior to the date of attribution of the grant;
  • being in a situation of international mobility and not having resided or exercised a main activity in Belgium for more than 24 months in the last 3 years.

 

Grant money:  maximum € 60,000, covering the researcher’s salary (€ 40,000) and operating costs (€ 20,000).

The request must be submitted to the secretariat of the RDA (Administration Recherche et Développement – Research and Development Administration), attention Mme Halleux, before 15 May by the academic head of the ULg reception unit via the ad hoc form.

Prisme Post-Doctoral Contracts

Every year Prisme launches an additional call for nominations for a one-year post-doctorate mandate.  The amount awarded is the equivalent of a grant-holder's salary.

This mandate is complementary to FNRS and Ulg funds. It applies to a researcher who is internationally mobile, which is to say someone who has not lived or worked primarily in Belgium for more than 24 months within the three years immediately preceding the first period as a visiting post-doctorate

Sabbatical Complement

Prisme offers complementary financing for researchers who wish to come to HEC-ULg on a one-year sabbatical stay.

Grant money:  Stay allowance of € 1,800 and, if applicable, € 5,700 for a 30-hour course.

Scientific Meetings (Congresses, Conferences, etc.)


FNRS

These are allowances granted for meetings of a strictly scientific character, involving the presentation and discussion of original contributions or reports.  These meetings can be congresses, study committees or conferences organized under the auspices of recognized scientific associations or bodies.

Money granted:  maximum grant:  cost of the return journey from Belgium to the destination of the meeting.

Date for submission of the request:  at least 2 months before the date of the scientific meeting if the meeting is held in Europe or 3 months if outside Europe.

The request can be made on the basis of an intended paper; proof of the acceptance of the paper (which often arrives only shortly before the meeting itself and thus too late for the advance period required by the FNRS) can be forwarded later.

Patrimoine of Liège University

Money granted:  flat daily allowance of € 100 per day of congress (maximum 7 days).

  • 1/09 if request is for October, November or December

  • 1/06 if request is for July, August or September.

Prisme

Scientific staff members of the School are encouraged to present papers at international scientific meetings.  In this way, they contribute to the reputation and international reach of our institution.  

Prisme grants its support to all scientific staff members, whatever their status.  
 

This support is, however subject to the following conditions:

  • the applicant must already have tried to obtain other sources of financing (reminder:  the FNRS for traveling expenses and the ULg Patrimoine for daily allowances);
  • the applicant must show the explicit support of the president of his or her Teaching and Research Unit;
  • the applicant must attach proof of acceptance of his or her paper (or abstract) by the organizing committee of the scientific meeting;
  • the applicant must produce a brief account of his or her participation at the scientific meeting.

 

It must be emphasized that these sources must be approached between 1 and 3 months prior to the scientific meeting.

Money granted:  costs actually incurred will be reimbursed up to maximum € 300 for travel in Europe and € 500 for travel outside Europe until available credit is exhausted.

Date for submission of the request:  no less than one month before the meeting.

Participation of Doctoral Students in Training Seminars

Prisme provides financial support for the mobility of its young doctoral students enrolled in a doctoral cycle at HEC-ULg if the seminar has an international character and is worth ECTS credits as part of the doctoral training program.  The request must be accompanied by a letter of support from the supervisor.

This type of support may be obtained only once, as a complement to the means from FNRS and ULg mentioned above.  This support can be cumulated only once a year with support for a presentation at international scientific conferences. 

Money granted: maximum € 1,250

Date for submission of the request:  at least one month before the seminar.

FNRS

Credit for a Short Stay Abroad

A high-level researcher wishing to travel abroad, for example in order to acquire new knowledge at a colleague’s laboratory or to facilitate an information project, may receive financial aid for a stay of maximum two months.

Money granted:  expenses at a rate of 50 Euros per day, to a maximum of 2,500 Euros; traveling expenses.

Date for submission of the request:  2 months before the date of a stay in Europe or 3 months before a stay outside Europe.

Patrimoine of Liège University  

Liège University reimburses expenses for scientific stays abroad.  Eligible expenses depend on the duration of the stay.

French Language Community

Travel Scholarships Competition

The competition is open to all persons regularly enrolled in a university or affiliated with a laboratory of the French Language Community of Belgium.  There is no age limit.  Candidates must be scientists preparing a doctorate, assistants or FNRS doctoral candidates.

The stay must be between 2 and 6 months.

Date for submission of the request:  The complete file must reach the Rector before 30 September for travel beginning no earlier than 1 April of the following year.

Prisme

The Teaching and Research Unit or the Research Center concerned can also apply to Prisme for a grant to supplement the institutional means set forth above in order to replace the researcher leaving for a stay of a short or medium duration.

Long Stays Abroad

FRS - FNRS

Scientific Missions

FRS-FNRS can allocate missions to university professors of the French Language Community to allow them to free themselves from all teaching obligations and devote themselves entirely to their research.  The duration of a contract is 12 months maximum and is not renewable.

Money granted: the allowance is set at a fixed rate of € 3,100/month.

Date for submission of the request:  The form must be addressed to the Rector by 15 December.

 

Patrimoine of Liège University – Duesburg Foundation

Grants to encourage post-doctoral students of Liège University to travel abroad at the beginning of their professional career.

Conditions:  a doctorate obtained with at least "high distinction".

The file must specify the object of the request and contain:

  • a detailed curriculum vitae mentioning in particular the grades obtained during previous studies and a list of publications or papers presented at scientific meetings;
  • the precise post-doctoral work project, its state of advancement, the steps taken, if any (name of the host University or laboratory, initial contacts, etc.);
  • the budget to complete the planned studies or the research work and any aid received from elsewhere;
  • at least one letter of agreement from a professor (of the host Institution or laboratory) under whose direction the post-doctoral research will be conducted;
  • at least two letters of recommendation from two other professors who have taught the applicant during his or her previous studies.

 

Money granted:  between €10,000 and  € 12,000
