Biography: My name is Benoit Ruysschaert, I am 23 years old and live in Hasselt (Flanders, Belgium). Since mid-September, I started my doctoral research together with the Smart City Institute at HEC Liège. My academic journey started in 2016 when I started my bachelor business engineering at the University of Hasselt. For my master’s, I wanted to specialise in sustainability management and therefore decided to go to HEC Liège for the master’s in Sustainable Performance Management. During these two years, I got in touch with the Smart City Institute and especially with professor Crutzen who became my supervisor for my master’s thesis about management controls in cities. As my curiosity for this topic was awakened, we decided to continue exploring the role of management controls to achieve city’s objectives under the form of a PhD. Since I was always interested in collaborating across language barriers, we opted for a joint-PhD with the University of Hasselt where professor Kuppens, expert in circular economy (CMK: Centre for Environmental Sciences), was very enthusiast to participate in this research. Our goal is to support local governments in their transition to become circular cities by researching effective management practices. In my free time, I am also involved with the transition to a circular economy as a volunteer in a library for children’s bikes and working tools because sharing is the new having!
